Lucius Septimius Severus succeeded Pertinax in AD 193. In the same year he swiftly disposed of his rivals Didius Iulianus and Pescennius Niger and defeated Clodius Albinus in 197. His victorious campaigns earned him various titles, i.e. Particus Arabicus, Particus Adiabenicus (AD 195), and Particus Maximus, the latter on securing the eastern frontier - the defeat of Parthia at Ctesiphon in AD 198. During his reign of eighteen years Septimius Severus implemented various reforms, he also restored Hadrian's wall and created a powerful army, which became the most important feature of the militaristic government of the later Roman empire.
