Another geographical blunder was made by CNN. After the opening game between South Africa and Australia in the Rugby World Cup Series, it was broadcasted that Newlands is in Johannesburg... And on August 22, the SABCs morning news bulletin stated Carolina and Hendrina in Mpumalanga were north of Pretoria!
An ACORN for the Mail & Guardian for keeping politicians on their toes. After sending the Ministers a letter on June 26, it tested the speediness of their replies. Full marks for perseverance were given to Roger Jardine, Director General of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. After his original response was hijacked with his car, his second attempt was still received long before others.
AIKôNA! Apparently a paid for luxury cruise on the QE2 doesnt count as a freebie. A short while after the editor of The Star, Peter Sullivan, made a big spiel condemning freebies in a column (The Star International Weekly, June 8 - 14), he went on a free trip from London to NY. As Krisjan Lemmer of the Mail & Guardian (August 4 - 10) so aptly put it: "Sullivans holiday was clearly a noble attempt to keep his editorial staff free of corruption."
An ACORN for Fine Music Radio, the independent community radio station that has made big classical and jazz waves in the Cape Peninsula since July 1. For the first time people can listen to connoisseur music 24 hours a day. FMR received about 300 congratulatory calls daily during their first month on air and within seven weeks 700 people joined the FMR Association (at an annual cost of R120). That is tuned-in!
AIKôNA! The Argus stumbled terribly over their own feet by printing a misleading headline (August 28): Chester to have brain scan after trampling. Williams had to have a brain scan, not because Small tramped on his back, but because he had been knocked unconscious just before the incident during a recent Currie Cup match.
Politicians might be overgrown infants (according to Pink Floyd), but even infants will know for which party they stand. Sowetan political reporter Pamela Dube made a big boo-boo (June 21) by referring to Frances Kendall as the leader of the Womens Rights Party. She was leader of the Federal Party in the 1994 general elections.
AIKôNA! Twenty Grahamstown principals rightly pointed fingers at the Sunday Times, accusing it of the cheapest kind of press sensationalism, when it published a picture of two East London schoolboys (August 6) making rude hand gestures. This was after the Supreme Court had ordered their reinstatement at Hudson Park High School, following an alleged drinking spree. We agree, zap to you too.
An ACORN for Noseweeks continuing exposés of the iniquities in the South African community, this time opening the can of worms of the Cape Law Societys cover-up of the bribery activities of its members at the Deeds Office. The editor, Martin Welz, seems to be the only real investigative reporter left in this country where muckraking has become a swear word in journalism.
