n Satellietoorlog heers in Suid-Afrika.
The SABC is intent on building a public sector radio service for all audiences. According to SABC radio chief, Govin Reddy, minority audiences deserved a broadcaster catering for their specific needs. He opposed the IBAs proposed privatisation of Radio Lotus and Radio Good Hope.
The integration of the broadcasting services of Radio Transkei, Radio Ciskei, Radio Thohoyandou and Transkei Television with the SABC was completed at the end of March.
Amid investigations of missing salaries totalling R1,4 million, Capital Radio is up for sale. SABCs Hoëveld, Jakaranda, KFM, East Coast, Algoa and Oranje radio stations are also for sale. Twenty-two bidders were shortlisted from an initial 110 punters. Bidders have to be licensed by the IBA before qualifying for ownership of any of the stations.
A major relaunch of the new names, programme content and line-ups of the remaining 15 radio stations began in October. Major changes are expected for Radio Zulu, Radio Sesotho and Afrikaans Stereo. The end of October is the deadline for Sesotho Stereo and Radio Swazi to move to their new locations in Bloemfontein and Nelspruit respectively. The unavailability of accommodation for the stations and a lack of finance to erect facilities in the relocated areas are problems yet to be solved.
The initial start-up of eight rural bureaux as part of SABC radio news drive to improve previously neglected areas and to include more community issues, will cost R3,2 million.
In June, Foreign Minister Alfred Nzo announced the ministry would no longer fund the SABCs external service, Channel Africa. This announcement was later withdrawn.
The IBA granted 82 licences to commercial radio stations in 1995. Six additional licences for private or commercial radio stations were also granted this year.
Community radio stations broadcasting educational programmes are gaining listeners. For example, the Ulwazi Educational Radio Project helps to bring effective education to adult listeners.
You can now listen to radio on the Internet, too. Since April, recorded snippets of Cape Towns Fine Music Radio (FMR)s show Night Birds can be heard on their homepage.
censorship Americas V-chip monitor lets parents act as censors and protects children from sex and violence on TV. In an effort to keep up with M-Net (and after numerous complaints), the SABC has introduced symbols to advise viewers on offensive content in programmes.

Nasionale Pers bekom n 50% aandeel in Touchline Media (Pty) Ltd, uitgewer van sporttydskrifte SA Sports Illustrated, Kick Off en Runners World.
policing the press The services of all journalists working as police reservists, informers or special agents are to be terminated. This follows the controversial involvement of radio journalist Carol Lane being made public during the Magnus Malan trial.
New legislation bans newspapers from publishing photographs of people in custody.
The Media Defence Trust backed 20% of noseWEEKs editor, Martin Welzs legal costs in the multi million rand case concerning the alleged defamation of Robert Milton Hall. The Trust feels the case involved the medias "continuing contest in the court for the right to publish information they believe the public need to know." Weltz won the case.
In August, Western Cape Attorney-General Frank Kahn withdrew previous subpoenas against the editors of Cape Times, Die Burger, Argus, SABC, Sapa and Associated Press to provide information on the activities of the People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad). Kahn also recognised the possibility that Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Act - under which they were subpoenaed - may be unconstitutional.
Gauteng police confiscated broadcast equipment worth R250 000 on the premises of right-wing Radio Koppies. It was allegedly stolen from the SABC.
The National Community Radio Forum, the watchdog of community media activists, claims that Sentech - previously the SABCs technical arm - unfairly assisted the establishing of white Afrikaans community radio stations two years ago. Sentech allegedly sold 39 high-powered FM transmitters to some Afrikaans stations at scrap metal prices on the eve of the inauguration of the IBA.
