Follis, Galerius Valerius Maximianus, AD 305 - 311

Galerius Valerius Maximianus was appointed Caesar in AD 293. He married Diocletian's daughter Galeria Valeria and was thus adopted into the Jovian house. Galerius was responsible for handling affairs on the eastern frontier where he proved to be successful. In AD 298 he acquired new territories in Mesopotamia and succeeded as Augustus in AD 305. During this period of the Second Tetrarchy, Galerius persisted in persecuting the Christians. He was also involved with a civil war against Maxentius and thereafter with Constantine. Galerius died at Serdicia in AD 311.
