AR antoninianus, M. Antonius Gordianus III
AD 238 - 244

Marcus Antonius Gordianus III became Caesar in AD 238 and was proclaimed Augustus on the death of Balbinus and Pupienus. The reign of Gordian III was marked by onslaughts from the Goths and revolts in Africa. Timesitheus, Gordian's praetorian prefect, conducted the imperial administration with great success. Gordian was consul for the second time in AD 241 and in AD 243 they were victorious against the Persians. However, Timesitheus died unexpectedly in the winter and the next year Gordian was murdered. He was succeeded by Philip who had replaced Timesitheus.
From Gordian's reign on the antoninianus became the principal silver denomination.

Coin portraits depict Gordian with short hair clinging to his head, replacing the individual curls of the previous era. This realistic likeness portrays his convex forehead, long nose and protruding upper lip.
