AR denarius, 47 - 46 BC, Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC from a patrician family. From early on he emphasised divine ancestry from the goddess Venus and her son Aeneas. Having studied in Asia, he distinguished himself as an accomplished orator and consentrated on a military and political career. Caesar governed Further Spain in 61 BC and established his reputation as a successful general. He formed a political coalition with the powerful generals Pompey and Crassus in 60 BC and became consul the next year. From 58 to 50 BC Caesar fought and governed Gaul. During the civil war of 49 - 45 BC he defeated Pompey at Pharsalus. In 46 BC he declared himself dictator for the next ten years, but was murdered on the Ides of March 44 BC.
