AE pentanummium, Justin II, AD 656 - 578

Justin II, son of Justinian's sister Vigilantia, became emperor in AD 565. Under Justin's reign the reconquered territories in Italy and Spain (acquired by his predecessor Justinian I) were lost to the Lombards and Visigoths respectively. Justin also waged a protracted war against the Sassanids. Near the end of his reign rumours had it that Justin was showing signs of unstable behaviour. This resulted in the appointment of Tiberius II in 574 as Caesar. Eventually Tiberius succeeded Justin in 578.
