Sestertius, Verus Maximinus I Trax, AD 235 - 238

Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus I Trax was very popular with the soldiers during the reign of Severus Alexander. When he was proclaimed emperor in AD 235 Maximinus appointed his son Maximus as Caesar. Maximinus won many victories against the Germans, however, due to a tax increase that resulted in a series of rebellions and the subsequent enmity of the senate, Maximinus was declared a public enemy and deposed. He was murdered in northern Italy on his way to Rome in AD 238 when Gordian I and Gordian II were proclaimed emperors in North Africa.

Obv. Laureate Maximinus right, MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG. GERM.
