AR denarius AD 202, Publia Fulvia Plautilla

Publia Fulvia Plautilla was the daughter of Hortensia and Fulvius Plautianus, commander of the Praetorian guard. In AD 202, at about the age of 14, Plautilla was married to Caracalla. She was granted the title of Augusta in the same year. The arranged marriage was not very happy: Caracalla despised his young wife and concord between the couple was non-existent.

In AD 205 Plautilla's father was executed for treason. Plautilla was also implicated in the alleged plot to murder Septimius Severus, and together with her brother, was exiled first to Sicily, and finally, to Lipari. Septimius Severus protected her until his death. When Caracalla became emperor, he promptly ordered her execution early in AD 212 and subsequently had all her visual images destroyed and her name erased from inscriptions.
