AE antoninianus, Pius Esuvius Tetricus I, AD 270 - 273

Caius Pius Esuvius Tetricus, last of the Gallic emperors, succeeded Victorinus in AD 270. After several successful campaigns against the Germans he established himself at Trier. Tetricus regained Aquitania for the Gallic empire. In AD 273 he appointed his son, Tetricus II as Caesar. The reign of the Tetrici ended in AD 274 when they surrendered to Aurelian who eventually pardoned them both. Early antoniniani minted at Lugdunum and Trier display the radiate and cuirassed bust of Tetricus and have a long obverse legend, later issues show the abbreviated legend IMP C TETRICVS PF AVG.

Obv. Tetricus I, radiate bust, draped, IMP. TETRICVS P. F. AVG.
Rev. Hilaritas with a long palm, HILARITAS AVGG.
