AE antoninianus, Vabalathus, AD 271 - 272

   

L. Julius Aurelius Vabalathus Athenodorus was the son of Zenobia of Palmyra. At Antioch antoniniani were jointly struck for Vabalathus and Aurelian with on the obverse Vabalathus with the legend VABALATHVS V. C. R. D. R. (Vir Clarissimis, Rex, Dux Romanorum) and on the reverse Aurelian, with his titles and an officina letter (here S). This series of coinage ended in AD 272 when Aurelian recaptured Antioch and defeated Vabalathus and Zenobia.
