Antoninianus base silver, P Licinius Cornelius Valerianus II, AD 256 - 258

P. Licinius Cornelius Valerianus II, eldest son of Gallienus, was made Caesar in AD 256. The obverse shows the youthful portrait of Valerian II, whose portraits, like those of his brother Saloninus, came to signify the optimism of a new golden age. However, the young Valerian was killed while supervising affairs on the Danube frontier in AD 258.

Obv. Valerian II, radiate and draped bust, facing right, P. LIC. VALERIANVS CAES.
