Projects • Emergent and advanced literacy development is Renée Nathanson’s area of specialisation. The development of literacy among at-risk learners is particularly relevant in the South African educational context. The Tereo Research Project is a unique project aimed at developing the reading and writing skills of street children and at-risk learners. It includes teacher training and development in assessment procedures and approaches to literacy instruction. The project, which started in 2005, is a collaborative project by a research team from Georgia State University and Stellenbosch University. It is sponsored by Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Gordon’s Bay. Colloquia • Computer assisted language learning is Estelle Kruger’s area of specialisation and links up with national priorities as outlined in the National Plan for Higher Education regarding the development of ICT in educational contexts. Colloquia • Educational linguistics covers topics in Psycholinguistics and Sociolinguistics and is mostly concerned with social applications of Linguistics in Education. It is Christa van der Walt’s area of specialisation and includes the role of English in bi/multilingual contexts, the role of multilingualism in higher education, language attitudes and language policies. Colloquia • Teaching creative writing is Estelle Kruger’s area of specialisation and links up with the development of creativity, learners’ imagination and writing proficiency in the teaching of Afrikaans, particularly in the pre-writing phase.
