On Monday, 8 September 2008, the 1st Southern African Conference on the First-year Experience commenced at the Protea Hotel, Techno Park, Stellenbosch.

At this event Dr Peter Dietsche, one of the keynote speakers stated that "the power of the postsecondary experience lies in people. At the end of the day it is people that make a difference in how students experience an institution. So it is very important for people to be a supportive mechanism in institutions. "
