1. Introduction

In this unit we continue our study of Analytical Geometry, with a focus on the circle as content, while again reflecting on the processes or strategies of a Coordinate Geometry approach.

Outcomes

After working through this unit you should be able to:

  • Derive and apply the equation for circles, with centre at the origin of a Cartesian coordinate system.
  • Derive and apply the equation for circles with centre not at the origin of the coordinate system.
  • Transform the general equation of a circle to the standard form by completing the square.
  • Derive loci relating to circles.
  • Solve problems involving circles and lines, including tangents to a circle.
