M. Aurelius Carus revolted against Probus in AD 282. When the latter was murdered, Carus succeeded as emperor and both his sons Carinus and Numerian received the titles of Caesar and Augustus. Carus defeated the Sarmatians and in the next year conquered the Persian capital, Ctesiphon. This victory earned him the title Parthicus (appearing only on memorial coin issues). In AD 283 Carus perished, allegedly struck down by lightning. Obv. Carus, radiate right, IMP. C. M. AVR. CARVS P. F. AVG. Rev.
