AE antoninianus, M. Aurelius Claudius II Gothicus

M. Aurelius Claudius Gothicus was proclaimed emperor on the assassination of Gallienus. Claudius defeated the Germans in Italy in AD 268. He had a good relationship with the senate and was victorious against the Goths at Naissus. His restoration of the Balkan provinces earned him the title restitutor orbis - restorer of the world.

The antoninianus above comes from the mint at Siscia where a a rare group of antoniniani with the obverse legend IMP. CLAVDIVS P. F. AVG. was struck (coins from other mints displayed the longer obverse legend IMP. C. M. AVRL. CLAVDIVS P. F. AVG. with punctuation dots. Claudius died of the plague in AD 270.

AE quinarius, Claudius Gothicus

   

The shorter version of the obverse IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG appears on the very first issues of antoniniani from the mint at Rome. Coin portraits of Claudius depict him with a very prominent pointed chin and are similar to portraits of his brother Quintillus, whose profile can sometimes be distinguished by more curly hair.
