AE antoninianus, M. Aurelius Claudius Quintillus, AD 270 |
M. Aurelius Quintillus, the younger brother of Claudius Gothicus, was proclaimed emperor at Aquileia when his brother succumbed to the plague in AD 270. Quintillus' reign lasted only thee months and he committed suicide when the army declared for Aurelian. This antoninianus was struck at the Siscia mint which in later issues omitted the C. L. of the long obverse legend. Obv. Quintillus, radiate, draped bust right, IMP. C. M. AVG. C. L. QVINTILLVS AVG. Rev. Providentia standing left, holding sceptre and wand, globe at feet. |
