AR denarius AD 202, Publia Fulvia Plautilla |
Obv. Plautilla facing right, PLAVTILLAE AVGVSTAE. During the three years that Plautilla was empress portraiture of her appears on five coin types. The denarius above shows the childish and plump features of Plautilla as depicted on her earliest coins. It features the 'melon hairstyle' in which her hair is centrally parted and horisontal braids are drawn into a bun at the back of her head. She is also said to have introduced a later fashion, the 'skull braid', where individual braids are drawn together to form a broad band of hair folded over the nape of her neck and then pulled up to the back of the neck - this style is also seen on coins of both the empresses Otacilia and Etruscilla. Rev. Wedding of Plautilla and Caracalla, standing facing each other, clasping hands, PROPAGO IMPERI. |
