AR denarius, 82 BC, C. Mamilius Limetanus

The first member of the gens Mamilia to receive Roman citizenship was the dictator L. Mamilius for his military support of Rome against Herdonius in 460 BC. Another famous member, L. Mamilius Vitulus became consul in 265 BC. Of the three branches - Vitulus, Turrinus and Limetanus, only the latter occurs on coinage. The moneyer, Limetanus, was probably related to the plebeian tribune Caius Mamilius Limetanus of 109 BC. Denarii of Limetanus are typically serrated and frequently display both Mercury and Ulysses as ancestors of the gens Mamilia, who claimed to be descended from Mamilia, granddaughter of Ulysses.

Obv. Bust of Mercury, caduceus behind, wearing winged petasus and chlamys.
Rev. Ulysses with conical cap, returning to Ithaca, carrying staff, behind C. MAMIL, in front LIMEAN.
