AR denarius, c. 81 BC, Annius Luscus L. Fabius Hispaniensis |
The Lusci featured strongly among the most prominent branches of the plebeian gens Annia. In 153 BC Titus Annius Luscus obtained the consulship and was later known for his strong opposition against Tiberius Gracchus in 133 BC. The moneyer of the denarius above, Caius Annius Luscus, fought in the Jugurtine war in 108 BC and was sent as governor of Spain against Sertorius from 82 - 81 BC. The denarius above is an imperatorial issue probably minted in northern Italy with the reverse type bearing the name of the quaestor L. Fabius Hispaniensis who had later deserted to Sertorius. The female bust depicted on the obverse possibly refers to the ancient Roman year-goddess Anna Perenna from whom the Annii claimed descent. Obv.
