AE25, Titus Flavius Vespasianus AD 79 - 81 |
This AE25 of Caesarea Maritima, Judaea, comes from a series of coins known as the Judaea capta series. These coins commemorate the capture of Jerusalem in AD 70 when Vespasian and Titus succeeded in quelling the first Jewish revolt. On coin reverses depictions of a Roman trophy alludes to this Roman victory. The conquered is usually presented by a mourning female captive, seated, with hands tied behind; sometimes a palm tree is shown presenting the province of Judaea, with the legend JVDAEA below - on Roman coins the reverse legend usually reads Judaea capta, and on provincial coins Obv.
