Lucius Verus, formerly known as Lucius Ceionius Commodus, was the son of Lucius Aelius Caesar. On his adoption by
Antoninus Pius, Lucius added Aelius Aurelius to his names, and later when he became co-emperor with
Marcus Aurelius, the latter transferred the name Verus to him. In AD 162 Verus was sent to campaign in Parthia - in AD 164 he received the title
Armeniacus (restorer of Armenia) and later, in AD 166, the title
Pater Patriae. Two years later both emperors had to leave for the Danubian provinces and thus escaped the plague that befell Rome at the time. During the Germanic war Verus, by then notorious for his extravagent lifestyle, became ill and in AD 169, on his return home, died at Altinum.
