Stellenbosch University:

Stellenbosch University is a medium-sized research-led institution situated in the Western Cape, South Africa. The University comprises ten faculties spread across four campuses with approximately 22 000 students. During 2006, the university embarked on an extensive consultative process to review its first-year experience. This led to the establishment of the First-Year Academy, an innovative systemic initiative to enhance student success.

First-year Academy

The First-year Academy is a comprehensive University initiative to improve the success rate of first-year students by implementing or facilitating a variety of research actions, programmes and projects. The FYA was implemented for the first time in 2007 and the entire University community is involved in this very important initiative. [Read more]


Centre for Teaching and Learning

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) was established in October 2003. The mission and vision of the Centre are informed by national policy imperatives as formulated in the White Paper on Education and Training (1997) and by the Mission of Stellenbosch University as articulated in Vision 2012.

The vision of the CTL is to be a centre of excellence that facilitates quality teaching and learning at Stellenbosch University. Its mission is to provide support to the institution, lecturers and students, in order to enhance the climate in which teaching and learning takes place, and in order to maximise the potential for student success.
