Application procedure
Upon receiving your enquiry, the Department of Sociology will send you an Application for Admission form. The following documents must accompany your application form when you apply for admission:

  • the application fee (contact the course co-ordinator for exact application fee)
  • a short CV
  • a certified copy of your academic record and certificate of conduct
  • a certified copy of your highest degree or diploma.

The closing date for applications is 31 October of the previous year (dates may vary for different programmes).

Names and details of candidates who have been accepted for a relevant course will be submitted to the University Administration. A letter of Admission will then be sent to you together with information regarding the registration process.

Registration procedure
For registration you have to complete a registration form, pay the registration fee and at least the first instalment of tuition fees and in the case of 2nd year students and thereafter who still have to register each year, pay continuation fees.

Doctoral candidates
The procedure for applying for a doctoral degree differs from the other postgraduate programmes:

  • You need to submit a completed application form together with an application fee, a short CV and qualification certificates.
  • An appointment can then be arranged with a relevant lecturer(s) to discuss your topic of study. A committee will evaluate the suitability of the topic in relation with the research specialisation areas of the department.
  • After consultation with the assigned promoter you can start working on your proposal.
  • After your research has been approved by the department, faculty committee, council and senate, you can register as a DPhil student.

Bursaries and bursary loans
The university (Division of Research Development), National Research Foundation and other institutions offer bursaries to postgraduate students. The department also offer a limited number of bursaries to deserving candidates. Please contact the programme co-ordinator for further details.

Starting your studies
When starting your studies, depending on degree programme, we will send you information about the following:

  • course information, including course fees
  • travel, board and lodging
  • prescribed books
  • bursaries and loans

You will also receive an invitation to an introductory meeting at the beginning of your study year.
