The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology offers a variety of undergraduate modules
and postgraduate programmes in sociology and social anthropology
that aim to provide a relevant response to the challenges presented
by contemporary society. For this reason it is our mission to develop
our instructional programmes to be firmly anchored within the realities
external to university life.
In order to attain these ideals the department's resources - human,
infrastructural and financial - are directed towards reaching out
to society, neighbouring communities and institutions. This is strongly
reflected in our teaching, research and outreach activities. Because
of this approach the department has gained a proven capacity to
deliver consultation services in the fields of transformation and
development. Internally the department restructured itself to embark
upon a stronger interdisciplinary academic role in undergraduate
and postgraduate teaching. Social Anthropology was incorporated
in 1997.
These webpages specifically outline the new and renewed undergraduate
modules and post-graduate programmes that are on offer by the department.
In line with our University's mission these programmes will address
objectives as envisaged by the national educational policy with
regard to the current needs of South Africa and its neigbouring
populations. Altogether 18 undergraduate modules as part of the
Faculty's Undergraduate
