AR denarius, 101 BC, C. Fundanius

   

The plebeian gens Fundania attained importance in the third century BC when one of its members became consul. The reverse of this denarius, issued by the quaestor C. Fundanius, commemorates the triumph of Marius held on his return from the successful expeditions against the Teutones and Ambrones at Aquae Sextae in 102 BC, and the Cimbri at Vercellae in 101 BC.

Obv. Winged helmeted head of Roma right, control-mark and dot behind, border of dots.
Rev. Marius as triumphator in a quadriga, holding laurel branch and sceptre, his son on horseback, holding a laurel branch, C. FVNDAN. Q in exergue.
