Understanding human rights through different belief systems: intercultural and interreligious dialogue (2005-2007)

This project commenced in 2005 in collaboration with four South African universities (Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape, University of KwaZulu Natal and the University of the Witwatersrand). The international partner and collaborator is Prof Cok Bakker from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.

The South African partners and researchers taking part in this project are:

• Prof Cornelia Roux of the Department of Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education, Stellenbosch University. [Project leader] (CV)

• Prof Juliana Smith (Faculty of Education, University of the Western Cape) [Senior researcher] (CV)

• Ms Rene Ferguson (University of the Witwatersrand) [Senior researcher] (CV)

• Ms Rosalie Small (Faculty of Education University of the Western Cape) [Junior researcher] (CV)

• Ms Petro du Preez (Faculty of Education, Stellenbosch University) [Junior researcher] (CV)

• Ms Janet Jarvis (Faculty of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal) [Junior researcher] (CV)

The aim of this project is to explore the impact on teachers' teaching a culture of human rights through intercultural and interreligious dialogue across different social and cultural settings in South African schools. In-service teachers enrolled in an ACE on Human Rights and Values and undergraduate students enrolled for Life Orientation (Religious Studies and Cultural diversity) are the participants in this project.

Five post-graduate students are part of the research project, two master’s students having completed their dissertations successfully in 2005. The first phase of this project (2005), in which participants' perceptions on the concepts interreligious, intercultural and human rights were determined, was successfully completed. Six papers were presented in 2005 and 11 papers and one poster presented in 2006 at national and international conferences. Two accredited articles have been published in 2005 and two in 2006. Another 2 articles have been submitted. Three PhD and four MEd-students commenced their studies in 2006.
