In addition to its domestic clients, the laboratory through its marketing partnership has expanded the client base in the international arena with services performed for barrel cooperages in the United States of America and France. The laboratory specializes in the testing of organochloride compounds in natural corks and conglomerates imported into South Africa . In addition the laboratory also performs analyses on wine and specific cellar materials. The laboratory focuses on the analysis of contaminants such as TCA (2,4,6 Trichloroanisole), TBA (2,4,6 -Tribromoanisole), TeCA (2,3,4,6-Tetrachloroanisole), PCA (Pentachloroanisole) and the corresponding phenol precursors. To ensure the provision of accurate information to clients, the laboratory undergoes inter-laboratory CEVAQOE testing with other laboratories worldwide that test for similar compounds. Thus far test results confirm that the laboratory values are within the ranges specified by CEVAQOE, and in agreement with those of other international laboratories. The laboratory also aims to be a national and international reference for trace analysis and has therefore initiated a process to obtain ISO 17025 accreditation through SANAS (South African National Accreditation System).

The current IWBT management staff (Professors Melané Vivier, Pierre van Rensburg, Maret du Toit and Florian Bauer) act as advisors to SunBio and work in close cooperation with the research team. Each of these IWBT staff members contributes their research expertise and knowledge to the SunBio projects. SunBio employs a group of experienced researchers that undertake the yeast related development work.
