Joint conference of the Association for German Studies in Southern African (SAGV) and the West African Association for German Studies (GAS)
The Department of Modern Foreign Languages is host to this historic first joint conference of the West African Association for German Studies (GAS) and the Association for German Studies in Southern Africa (SAGV) which takes place at the Wallenberg Centre (STIAS) from 14 to 18 March 2010.
Delegates from Togo, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Benin and Côte d’Ivoire, Germany, South Africa and Namibia will present papers on the topic “Spiel und Leidenschaft” (Games and Passion) which has been chosen to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORK FOR GERMANY-ALUMNI
The Alumniportal Deutschland is an international platform for information and contacts for Germany-Alumni
and for organisations and businesses which have an interest in co-operating and networking with Germany-
Alumni worldwide. It is arranged cross-organisational and interdisciplinary.

Mandarin Students’ Annual Trip to China (2009)
| Purpose: | To create an opportunity for serious students of Mandarin to be exposed directly to Chinese language and culture |
| When: | Three weeks between 27 June and 17 July (exact dates to be announced later) |
| Where: | Beijing (name of the university to be announced later) |
The programme is open to all second and third year Mandarin students. Please refer to the relevant page (pdf) for more information. Note that applications have to be submitted by 15 April 2009.
German Book prizes for 2008
During a function attended by the German Consul Hansjörg Marquardt students who had achieved top position in their respective modules of German were each awarded a book prize donated by the German Consulate. The presentation took place on 4 March 2009 and honoured student achievements of 2008.
