Prof Cornie Groenewald

Cornie Groenewald is a practicing consultant sociologist and is involved with research and teaching. He headed up the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Stellenbosch University until the end of 2005. Previously he held positions at the Universities of the Western Cape and Port Elizabeth. He has been teaching numerous topics related to sociology, but recently specialised in community development. His research experience covers historical studies in the development of sociology as a discipline as well as empirical research on social and community problems. These include studies of rural and farm communities, urban and rural movements in community development, poverty and a community mobilisation project in combating HIV and /AIDS in an urban African community. Groenewald has written 2 popular guides, 11 chapters in academic books, 11 scientific articles, 16 occasional papers and research reports, and edited 2 books. He is a member of the South African Academy of Science and Arts, South African Sociological Association, Population Studies Association of Southern Africa, Union for African Population Studies, the International Society for the System Sciences, and the International Community Development Society. He was the UNFPA South African consultant for assessing a HIVand AIDS capacity building course for government planners and population training and research at universities in South Africa. He holds an MA and a DPhil.
