SA Student Travel Grants

Travel Grant for students to attend the 2008 IAVS Symposium
The local committee of IAVS will make available funds to students or young researchers to attend the IAVS 2008 Symposium.  Applicants should be:

  • citizens or permanent residents of South Africa or any other African country,
  • less than 40 years of age,
  • students or as yet without a permanent position (such as Post-doctorate fellows).

Application Procedure:

  • submit an abstract for either an oral or poster presentation at the symposium.
  • indicate into which topic or section of the Symposium (see Symposium Programme) it is to be presented. Abstracts will first be screened for acceptance before your request for funding is considered.
  • send a recent CV, a copy of student ID (or a letter to establish present status), and recommendation by two referees.
  • Provide a detailed listing of travel and other costs (make these realistic to ensure funding).

Funding:  Grants up to R5 000 are available for a number of student or young researchers.
Submission Procedure: Enquiries or applications should be sent to:
Professor Roy Lubke at Department of Botany, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, 6140. (E-mail: r.lubke@ru.ac.za).
Closing date:  30 June 2008

Once all papers or poster abstracts have been accepted a committee will review applications for funding and advise the successful applicants.

Special Admission for Western Cape Students

Students of secondary schools and universities in the Western Cape Province may attend the scientific proceedings (plenary sessions, scientific sessions, poster sessions) of the International Association for Vegetation Science Symposium at no cost. They must, however, register at the Registration Desk and receive a badge indicating their visitor status. They will also receive a copy of the day program. They will not be entitled to the symposium materials (bag, booklet). If they would like to participate in the tea break snacks (incl. beverages) and the lunch, a fee of R100 will be charged.
