The Multi Graph applet

The Multi Graph applet can show the graphs of several functions. In the example below, you can change the domain and range, you can zoom in and out (the mouse action is also active), you can change the formulae or add a formula. The parameter a and the slider is optional. Try it!

Here is an activity I use with my students:

Click on the "Launch Java graph!" button to open the Java applet.
Click on the slider ... Describe how different values of the parameter k influences the function f1(x) = x3 + kx.

Explain how and why k influences f1(x):
» by viewing f1(x) as the sum of two functions f2(x) and f3(x)
» by viewing f1(x) as the product of two functions f2(x) and f3(x).

You can use the applet below to develop/check/illustrate your theory ... Type your own functions in f2(x) and f3(x) and press ENTER ...

Now use the applet to investigate similar examples, e.g. f1(x) = x4 + kx2 ...

In our last example below the applet shows the three graphs making up f(x) = sin(A*x) + cos(B*x) with no options for the viewer to change. Lean on the sliders!
