Admission requirements: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with German as a major or an equivalent qualification. An average of 60% in the major is a prerequisite.

The German Honours programme consists of two modules. Module one is devoted to the study of at least three topics in the field of German Literature and Culture. Module two consists of an independently conducted piece of research on a topic of the student's choice supervised by a member of the department. The language of tuition is German.

Masters programme in German (M.A. 100% thesis)

Course code: 26107 - 878(120) (NKR 9: 100%-thesis) (NH)(After Honours) and - 877 (Senate Approval)
Admission requirements: Honours in German or an equivalent qualification as approved by Senate

The student undertakes independent research and writes a thesis, which makes up 100% of the final mark. Students select a thesis topic in consultation with a member of the Department under whose supervision the thesis will be written.

Masters programme in German (MA 50 % thesis)

Course code: 26107- 888 (180) (NKR 9: 50%-thesis) (NH)

Duration: At least one year
Admission requirements: Honours in German or an equivalent qualification as approved by Senate

Double Master degree (MA in German) with the Universität Leipzig (from 2012)

This new MA in German is a joint programme of the German Section of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Stellenbosch and the Herder Institut of the Universität Leipzig in Germany. It is the first double degree in German between a South African and an overseas university.

Students who successfully complete the MA-Programme in German 888 (50%-thesis) will receive a degree certified by both universities in the following manner:

Requirements

Applications are invited from students with a BA Hons in German. A pass mark of at least 70% and a proven knowledge of German (at least level B2) are recommended for admission to this programme.
Excellent social, intercultural and communication skills, as well as flexibility and openness to new ideas are a prerequisite.

Programme structure

Students will spend two semesters in Germany and after their return to Stellenbosch, complete a 50% thesis which will be examined by both universities.
In Leipzig, students have to complete 2 modules per semester as well as a Praktikum.

Doctoral Studies programme in German (PhD)

Course Code: 26107 - 978
Duration: At least two years.
Admission requirements: Master of Arts in German or an equivalent qualification
