In 2003, approximately 56 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS, of which 5.6 million were in South Africa. Of this number, 3.1 million were women, 2.4 million were men and about 100 000 were babies. The provinces with the highest HIV prevalence were Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal. From the late 1990’s to 2002, there was a 63% rise in adult deaths in South Africa, of which 61% were HIV/AIDS related. Adding to these statistics is the fact that HIV most frequently strikes adults in the prime of their working years, posing a threat to the economic growth and development of millions of people employed in the informal sector. All this necessitates a qualification such as the PDM, which empowers people to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the workplace.
