The PDM group of 2006 enjoy the sunshine during the summer school. |
The female-male ratio of PDM students have always been skewed to the feminine side, with male students sometimes comprising only a quarter of the total students. In 2006, however, the male students were a third of the students completing the course: of the group of 222 students, 75 were male.
There were also students from Canada and the Netherlands, which are first-world countries that do not get mentioned often in HIV/AIDS statistics. Both these countries however showed an increase in the number of people living with HIV from 2003 to 2005. Canada specifically faces the challenge of educating the youth on HIV and AIDS related issues. The high levels of ignorance set the parameters for a larger epidemic in the future. HIV in Canada follows the same patterns of poverty as in other countries, which is mirrored by a clustering around the affected sectors.
