Have you ever heard of Ido, Maithili or Malayalam? No, it is not a poisonous reptile specie or a delicatessen made from some exotic animal. It is the first languages of some of our students that are currently doing the PDM.

Ido is a constructed language created with the goal of becoming a universal second language for speakers of different linguistic backgrounds. It was developed in the early 1900s, and has a sizable following, especially in Europe. Maithili is spoken by approximately 45 million people in India and Nepal. The name is derived from Mithila, an independent state in ancient times. It is considered to be a dialect of Hindi and Bengali and received the status of an independent language in India in 2003. Lastly, Malayalam is the language spoken predominantly in the state of Kerala in southern India. It is one of the 23 official languages of India, spoken by around 37 million people. This proves that the Africa Centre crosses all boundaries of language and culture in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
