Southern Africa remains the region worst-affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A combination of factors are responsible for this including: poverty and social instability, high levels of sexually transmitted infections, the low status of women, sexual violence, high mobility (particularly migrant labour), and lack of good governance. That is why it is essential for more African people to enrol for the PDM.
In 2004, the African country with the most entries was Botswana. In 2003, an estimated 250 000 – 340 000 people, from a population of approximately 1,7 million, were living with HIV. The circumstances of extreme poverty to which more than half the population of Botswana is exposed, worsens the situation. There has however been a 15% increase in knowledge about HIV prevention since 2003, but there still is a long way to go.
