Introduction
From the year 2000 the Arts Faculty at the University of Stellenbosch is offering degree programmes that have been carefully designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for a variety of exciting careers.

Undergraduate Programmes
• BA in Humanities
a unique programme in a wide range of humanities subjects in which students develop the academic versatility and flexibility to resolve or deal in a wide variety of careers with topical problems of Southern Africa in the twenty-first century

• BA in Language and Culture
a programme covering a wide variety of modern and ancient languages, as well as the cultural contexts in which they occur, and which equips students with the knowledge and skills needed for careers in professions requiring expertise in languages and culture, the media, the diplomatic service, teaching, publishing, tourism and translation

• BA in Social Dynamics
a programme in the social sciences that equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand and influence social problems and processes, and which empowers them to follow careers in the socio-economic, social and political sectors of the labour market such as journalism (newspapers, radio, television), research for Parliament and NGOs, party politics, the diplomatic service, trade unions and representation of interest groups

• BA in Christian Ministries
a programme in conjunction with the Cornerstone Christian College for a career in Christian ministry and Christian leadership

• BA in Development and the Environment
a programme that equips students with knowledge and skills in Geographical and Environmental Studies, Sociology and Social Anthropology which will prepare them for careers in national and local government, non-governmental organisations and private enterprises, and which concentrates on community development, population development, tourism management, resource planning and management, and integrated environmental planning and management

• B in Drama and Theatre Studies
a programme that provides students with a comprehensive set of theatre and interpretative skills that may be used in the performing arts and entertainment industry (e.g. film, radio, television, cabaret, revue, musical theatre, community theatre, educational theatre and industrial theatre) and that can also be applied in a wide variety of careers and industries (such as advertising, public relations, marketing, journalism, tourism, fashion and education)

• BA in Fine Arts
a programme that provides students with the knowledge and skills to become professional artists or to follow any one of a number of careers in the arts such as graphic design, illustration, jewellery design and art teaching

• BA in Human Movement Science
a programme that equips students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to follow careers in the professional fields of sport, recreation, movement education, fitness and health management, as well as in sport and physical activities for the disabled

• BA in Human Resource Management
a programme that equips students with the knowledge and skills required for careers in the management of human resources in organisations

• BA in Information Science
a programme that equips students with the theoretical insights and intellectual abilities and skills required for a variety of information-orientated careers in the current electronic environment, for example, information management and related consultation work, multimedia publishing, database and internet activities as well as information-related work in developing communities

• BA in International Studies
a programme that equips students with knowledge about political and economic interactions across national borders, and which will prepare students for careers in the diplomatic service, the international services of state departments, the international division of Parliament, the tourist industry, international telecommunications, international journalism, the import and export industries, international organisations, international non-governmental aid organisations, international companies and consulting companies that operate internationally

• BA in Law
a programme that gives students a broad foundation of legal knowledge as well as an understanding of the way that legal rules function in society by means of a study of law within the context of other relevant disciplines in the humanities with a view to more advanced study as part of the LLB programme

• BMus
a programme that offers training in music in the academic sphere as well as in performance, and that will enable students to follow careers as performing artists, music teachers, accompanists, music editors, musicologists and composers as well as in related careers such as journalism and musical adaptation

• BA in Political, Philosophical and Economic Studies (PPE)
a programme that orientates students in the disciplines of Philosophy, Political Science and Economics, and which equips them with the kind of knowledge and skills relevant to political economy within particular philosophical frameworks that will enable them to function in the private and public sectors as managers, journalists, business people, diplomats and policy makers

• BPsych
a programme in Psychology that equips students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to meet the need for psychological services at the primary mental health level

• BA in Social Work
a programme that equips students with the knowledge and skills required to render social work services in different sectors of society and that leads to registration with the South African Social Work Council

• BA in Value and Policy Studies
a vocational programme in intellectual leadership within the context of
modern market economic conditions; the programme is both broad and enriched; more than normal entry criteria apply as a result of the inclusion of either Financial Accounting or Economics or Business Management up to the advanced level

Except in special cases, formal lectures are presented in Afrikaans. In many subjects, however, students can use either Afrikaans or English in written work, including tests, examinations, assignments, papers and essays.
